2010 NBA Draft: Are the Timberwolves Going To Do Something Crazy?

Timber WolfJun 20, 2010

If anyone is following the NBA right now, you would be hard pressed and challenged to not find a Timberwolves rumor right now.

Because the Wolves possess three first round picks, two second round picks, two valuable European contracts, and an abundance of cap space, there are so many scenarios going on that it's hard not to find.

Last season's 15-67 record convinced Kahn and Rambis that their team lacks the kind of player who can singlehandedly rescue victory from defeat - a Wade, a Kevin Durant, or as Kahn once put it, "our own Brandon Roy," who Kahn's predecessor traded away for Randy Foye four years ago.

"It's possible, but not with any certainty," Kahn said. "It's not like this is the kind of draft where you look at somebody like a LeBron James and say, 'Oh, my Lord, that's it.' There have been players like that through the years, but I don't think I can say that conclusively this year, even about John Wall."

"That's the kind of thing that you hope and pray sometimes works out that way."

David Kahn, the Minnesota Timberwolves GM, hoped that they would have some lottery luck, of course that was idiotic seeing as the Wolves have never moved up in the draft before, and instead of drafting second overall (like their record), they are drafting fourth.

"This is a weird year nobody has confronted before," Kahn said. "We need to get our arms around how this particular summer will play after the music stops and all the chairs are filled. It's going to be a strange summer that will feel like it will never end."

The biggest thing for the Wolves is a game changer, a player that you can put the ball in their hands and tell them to take over. For a long time, Evan Turner (expected to be taken by Philly at No. 2) looked to be that guy. It appears that it's going to take some maneuvering if the Wolves even want to have a chance at him.

Paul Allen, KFAN Radio Host (Minnesota)

"Not ground-breaking, but it will be Favors or Johnson if we keep the four. Zilcho chance they select Cousins. Those opinions are 100 percent accurate. And count on Wall one and Turner two and there will be no change. Here's the bit ... I was sworn to secrecy by a very reliable source but there's going to be a story by a credible NBA writer for a major newspaper and supposedly very soon that will send your head spinning. If it plays out the way it was explained to me, your Wolves and one of the game's best will be tied together. If it doesn't hit the web within five days, I will share said rumor, but until it goes public i cannot. hope you understand. If and or when this story/rumor emerges my over-under for views of said thread on this page is 4,000. And that might be light".

He has all ready stated that it isn't LeBron, Wade, Granger, Gay, CP3, among others. The players that haven't been mentioned are the likes of Carmelo Anthony. Although I don't really look too hard at this initially, there have been some very credible tweets going on in Wolvestown.

"An NBA contact tells me #Twolves talking to Tor. about Bosh... have no idea if he is open to idea of coming here. It would be a sign-&-trade. Start with Jefferson. But it would take more than that. RT @GooseHHS @DarrenWolfson What would we give up for Bosh?"

I wouldn't read too much into these rumors about Chris Bosh or Carmelo until a GM talks about it in someway, the only way that Bosh would be in a Wolves uniform is if he is involved in a sign and trade. Kahn actually went on to say that this summer was weird because there are a lot of teams with cap room, and he anticipates a "lot of sign and trades."

There are talks amongst Wolves fans that the deeper you go into these rumors, it's starting to look like the Wolves are trying to pull both Anthony and Bosh. EXTREMELY HIGHLY UNLIKELY.

But other tweets have stated that Kahn and his assistant Tony Ronzone are working 15 hour days to get this right. One would have to assume that the Wolves are going to do something crazy (not as crazy as the whole Flynn-Rubio thing), they have all the assets in the world to pull something out of their hat.

Hoopsworld

"In talking to a number of league sources in the run-up to the draft, HOOPSWORLD keeps hearing one name, in particular, involving possible draft day trades. We've heard plenty of rumors involving Minnesota Timberwolves forward Al Jefferson, and it turns out that where there's smoke there is definitely fire. Quite a few teams have indicated that Al Jefferson is one of their primary targets this summer".

Of course, this was bound to come around. Jefferson is probably in talks with New Jersey, Sacramento, and among others in a possible draft day trade. At this point, it's looking like Al could be traded, and Kevin Love is the one to stay as of right now, so much can change in a few days however.
NBA Draft and conclusion
Ultimately, this offseason looks like it's going to be busy, especially for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They look slated to do something big. But at the very least, the Wolves will walk away with Wesley Johnson/Demarcus Cousins, and a player at 16/23, with a Tony Ronzone second round genius pick.
But I highly doubt it's going to be that simple.
