Did Texas Throw Away the Chance of a Playoff System?

No NameJun 17, 2010

So Texas has decided to save the Big 12.

What if they had decided to join the Pac-10 or another conference? I have compiled a list of four massive conferences that many college football fans may love to see. Each power conference will have 10 teams.

If these four power conferences were to have formed, it would be one wild season, followed possibly by a great playoff system.

Based upon nothing more than geographical location, here are the four massive conferences that many fans might rather have.

NCAA North

Michigan
Ohio St
Purdue
Notre Dame
Nebraska
Nebraska
Wisconsin
Tennessee
Michigan St
Illinois

Comprised mainly of Big 10 teams, this would definitely be a step up. With Notre Dame finally in the mix, along with power house programs such as Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, and Tennessee, it would provide many exciting conference games for fans.

NCAA West

USC
Washington
Utah
BYU
California
Oregon
Oregon St
Stanford
UCLA
Boise St

Obviously not much has changed here, and many would even wonder if this would be a downgrade from the Pac-10. The traditional rivalry games would still exist, but adding Utah, BYU, and Boise State would draw in some new fans.

NCAA East

Virginia Tech
Penn St
Boston College
Clemson
NC State
South Carolina
Virginia
Georgia
Pittsburgh
West Virginia

A nice mix here of ACC teams and a dab of Big 10 and SEC powers. Penn State coming over fits in nicely with the likes of Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Georgia comes into the conference for some added flavor. This might not be the best conference from top to bottom, but there would definitely be a ton of exciting games.

NCAA South

Texas
Oklahoma
Texas A&M
Florida
Florida State
Miami
LSU
Auburn
TCU
Alabama

Obviously I saved the best for last. Think about the crop of talent that comes from the south. Basically we have the best of the ACC, Big 12, and SEC all in one powerhouse conference. Last year's champion Alabama Crimson Tide join a conference with the three major teams from Florida. With the Gators, Seminoles, and Hurricanes going up against the Longhorns and Tigers of LSU, the games are sure to be epic. I haven't even gotten to the bottom of the conference which would include Oklahoma, Auburn, TCU, and A&M.

Obviously this will probably never happen, but just imagine if it did, and the small teams were taken out of the equation. No Ohio State vs. South Washington Capital Tech State crap games the first few weeks of the season. Every single week would have huge games, and the playoff system we all want could possibly be a reality.
