Swiss Clocks Spain: World Cup Round-Up, Day Six

Alex FergusonJun 16, 2010

Wow. You could almost see the Swiss jumping around in the streets of Geneva and Zurich after they upset Spain, that is, if they weren’t too busy making money from hedge funds and insurance.

Whatever happened to a quiet World Cup?

1) Switzerland: Headlines Please

We decided to go for a headline competition:

1) Swiss Clocks Spain
2) Spain Hit In The Cowbells By Swiss Stunner
3) Gold Rush! Switzerland beat Spain
4) Hedge Fund Traders Celebrate Swiss Win For One Minute, Then Get Back To Making Money

Whatever the headline is, the fact remains: Spain 0, Switzerland 1, was one hell of an upset. A quick round of applause for the defensive effort, too....although Spain did have their chances.

2) The Reign in Spain...

...is really going down the drain, it seems. Spanish flair battled Swiss muscle, but what actually made the goal was not a brilliant passing move from our small, not-so-European neighbours, but a hilarious defensive error.

3) Chile Turn Up The Heat

Chile played so well that they should have hammered Honduras 8-0, but once again, bad shooting and some dumb luck kept the score down to 1-0. But Spain should be afraid of this team, for their match-up could well be one of the best, most attacking games of the first round.

4) Vuvuzelas silenced

The "Most Annoying Sound in the World Since Justin Bieber Opened His Mouth" was finally quietened when Uruguay put 3 past the host—albeit they were from a deflected goal, a penalty, and a sublime pass from Diego Forlan. South Africa's hopes of getting to the second round are now near extinction. They'll have to beat France comfortably and hope the results go their way.

5) Diego Who?

Everyone at Manchester United was pretty rude to Diego Forlan when he played for them, but after his super display for Uruguay in their victory over "Bafana Bafana," they're probably wishing that he played for their country. As United is supported all over the world, that'll be quite a lot of them, then....

Oh, and Homer Simpson made me laugh today.
