In April Chris Coghlan gave the impression he subbed out the wooden bat for a cardboard one. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year suffered with a .195 average with 23 strike outs. Things got a little better in May as he hit for .252, still well below his rookie average of .321.
June has been a different tale. Every time he has stepped to the plate thus far it’s like he’s playing Wiffle ball. He has exploded batting .489 as of June 16, boosting his overall average to a respectable .274.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Before Mike Stanton was called up, Coghlan was one of the ones on the short list to get replaced. Instead, Cameron Maybin was replaced and Coghlan stayed hot.
“It’s a game of failures”, Coghlan said. “Your natural reaction is to doubt when you fail in anything in life. There were times when my mind would wander, but I can say I know I’ve been through worse in life than just the struggles in baseball, and it’s all about perspective”.
