Mountain West Takes Interest In Big 12 Teams, Takes Next Step To BCS

Old AccountJun 13, 2010

The college football landscape continues to head into a new direction.

First, the dominoes fell when Nebraska made the move to the Big Ten, and Colorado made a move to the Pac 10 (which may soon be 16).

Now the Mountain West Conference is ready to jump on the opportunity of becoming a BCS conference.

According to numerous reports, the conference is very interested in inviting Kansas, Missouri, and Kansas State, with Baylor still a possibility.

These three teams have been left out in the cold, not getting invited to the Pac 10, and at least in Missouri's case, not getting an invitation from the Big Ten.

On Friday, the BCS buster powerhouse known as Boise State officially joined the conference.

Now, the conference is sneaking in on a chance to become one of the more respectable conferences in the nation.

If the conference can add three Big 12 North schools, the Mountain West will be one of the more balanced conferences in the country.

TCU, Boise St, Utah, and BYU have had a lot of success in football over the last six or more years.

Missouri, a respectable football program, along with two programs that would thrive in Kansas and Kansas State, would improve the competition.

The biggest key, however, is the basketball program. Kansas, a powerhouse on the hardcourt, and the improving Kansas State program, would bring credibility to the conference for arguably the most popular sport in college athletics.

The additions the Pac 10 are preparing to make is great, but a new BCS conference will emerge to rival with them.

As of now, there are plenty of dominoes still to fall.

We don't know when or if teams may move on to a new conference, whether it's the Big East, Big 10, SEC, or the others mentioned above.

The Mountain West has felt worthy of a BCS automatic bid for quite some time. With the possible acquisitions of these new schools, their wish may finally be granted.
