2010 FIFA World Cup Talent Scout: Nigeria's Vincent Enyeama

Yoosof FarahJun 12, 2010

Argentina may have beaten Nigeria 1-0 in the second match of Group B at this summer's World Cup, but the score could've well been much greater for Diego Maradona's men.

If it hadn't been for Nigeria's best player, goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, the likes of Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain might've added quite prolifically to their goalscoring tallies for Argentina.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu and Obafemi Martins offered little in attack, as the Nigerian players choked up front, leaving it to the defenders and mainly the goalkeeper to ensure at least a draw could be had.

Enyeama pulled off save after save and it's no wonder the Hapoel Tel Aviv No. 1 has been tipped to be the answer to Arsenal's goalkeeping crisis.

Strengths

A very athletic man between the sticks, Vincent Enyeama has the agility required to produce world-class Gianluigi Buffon-esque saves that not only look spectacular but are also very hard to pull off.

He seems to have the great leg strength needed for optimum aerial ability and he has the leap, amongst other things, required to stop even the most accurate of far-corner shots.

He also has good wrist strength so while he can't always catch every shot, he is able to firmly claw the ball away from goal, and most importantly, away from the follow-up attackers.

FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi will testify, having seen his two efforts of the highest quality turned away by the Nigeria shot-stopper.

Enyeama also seems to have great control of his defence, communicating well and organising his backline efficiently enough to make sure they're in the correct position when the opposition attacks.

And lastly, the 27-year-old has the reflexes that'll make any Table Tennis player proud, let alone goalkeeper, as he has displayed his capability of comfortably saving short-range shots from just a few yards out.

It's not at all surprising that this is the player who won the 2009 Israeli Premier League Player of the Year and is generally considered far too good for Israel's top-flight.

Weaknesses

The one main weakness when it comes to Vincent Enyeama is aerial presence when defending free-kicks and corner-kicks coming into the penalty area.

He may be able to jump high and get to the ball, but he often gets his positioning wrong and can be obstructed by his own players instead of getting into the right place to pick the ball out of the air at its most dangerous point.

Against teams with tall and fairly strong strikers, this can really be a serious problem.

Besides that, Enyeama has developed into a top-class goalkeeper, and a move to the Premier League (with Arsenal especially) could be in the cards.

La Liga, and a team like RCD Espanyol, is also another good option considering the Spanish top-flight is renowned for the high amount of goals allowed.
