World Cup Scores: South Korea... The Perfect Storm??

Adam IlyJun 12, 2010

With the World Cup just a hop, skip and a jump away, I was like most, sitting at my computer clicking away, gathering all the information I could, and finally, I came up with a team that will shock everybody, South Korea . No, you didn’t read it wrong, South Korea. The team ranked 46th in the world, behind teams like Gabon and Latvia. But, I think, this team has a perfect storm brewing.

At defense, Cha Doo-Ri who plays for Freiburg in Germany will be the main back, the teams defense is not a strength, but in no way is it a weakness. The midfield is where the team will make their money, Park ji-Sung is the obvious top dog, and he plays for Manchester United , and is the team’s bread and butter. But other midfielders like Ki Sung-yong (Celtic) and Kim Nam-il (Tomsk) will make or break this team. And in attack South Korea has Park Chu-young , who plays for Monaco in France, is a prolific goal scorer and will provide a constant attack against opposing defenses. This is one of those rosters that if they get hot, watch out.

South Korea also got lucky in the group draw, it’s a group that should let Korea slip out and do some damage in elimination. Obviously, South Korea will have to get by Argentina , which I don’t know if they can do (I did pick Argentina to win it all), but Nigeria and Greece are both average or below. I predict they finish second in-group play.

If what I predict is correct, South Korea will go on too play France, and I think they’ll win it. Don’t clean off your computer screen or check your computer for viruses just yet. France and South Korea play a lot alike, and I don’t think France’s attack could get by South Korea, meaning all South Korea needs is one little squeaker and they could march on to the Quarter Finals. When South Korea gets to the quarterfinals they will play England , I just can’t bring myself to picking South Korea again, but they very well could.

In turn, I have South Korea going to the Quarters, and possibly the semis, so before you lock in your picks, take into consideration this final analogy, South Korea is like Cornell was before this years NCAA Tourney , people considered them, but didn’t pick them. South Korea is not an underdog however, there just under the radar, which is always a key virtue before the World Cup.

Why not?
