Jose Mourinho's Departure To La Liga Is a Loss for Serie A

Frank TiganiJun 9, 2010

Love him or loathe him, Jose Mourinho is arguably one of the best coaches in the world right now, and perhaps even one of the greatest of all time. The Portugese tactician is more than just a football coach.

He is a phenomenon.

He attracts as much attention, if not more, than the big clubs and big stars that he has managed.

The reason is that he is unique compared to most modern-day managers. This is not just because of his extraordinary success since becoming a professional coach in 2000. What really makes Mourinho so unique is his extraordinary arrogance, his unbound ego, and his straight-talking approach.

For many, these would not seem like admirable characteristics for one to have, and generally they are not. The difference with Jose Mourinho is that he can back it up, and this is what makes him such an intriguing figure. He is not just talk—though talk he can—but he can walk the walk, as they say.

Having started his professional coaching career just ten years ago with Benfica, Mourinho has claimed an incredible 17 trophies with three different clubs in three different countries since. This list of victories includes two Champions League trophies and, rather disbelievingly, six domestic league wins.

A most impressive collection of triumphs shows that Mourinho can be relied upon to virtually guarantee success. This is one reason why he is a major loss for Serie A. Without Mourinho, Inter are not as strong, and as a result, the Serie A is not as strong.

With Mourinho now at Real Madrid, Los Blancos will be much stronger, and subsequently, so will La Liga. With the quality of players Mourinho will have to work with in the Spanish capital, expect to see a fiercely competitive and organized Real Madrid next season.

Serie A is not only at a loss because of the success that Mourinho can virtually guarantee, but also because of the attention that Mourinho, the phenomenon, attracts.

It is well known that Serie A, or Calcio, is not in the best shape today. The big stars, now more than not, ply their trade in England and Spain as Italy fails to properly deal with a number of internal conflicts whilst also suffering financially as a result.

The effect has resulted in many fans, both local and overseas, abandoning the Italian game.

Mourinho's presence in Italy, to a small degree but significant nonetheless, reversed this trend, if only for a short time. It was a welcome relief that, instead of Calcio only receiving attention because of Calciopoli, which has been the case in recent years, the Serie A received attention because of Mourinho's captivating persona.

Jose's defection to Madrid is a loss for Serie A and especially Inter. There are few managers who could fill the void left by Mourinho, and Benitez is not one of them. Moratti may even be aware of this, hence his first preference was actually Fabio Capello.

Many Italian fans may disagree that Serie A is at a loss with Mourinho's departure. But, given his incredible record along with the fact that he won everything there was to win in Italy in just two years, how could he not be a loss?

Sure, one can argue that there simply are no teams in Serie A, Juventus and Roma included, that can compete with Moratti's Inter, and this is true. But, nonetheless, the facts remain the same.

In addition, he also won the Champions League after defeating the mighty Barcelona and Chelsea along the way.

For those Italian fans who still refuse to accept such a notion, perhaps some gratitude should be in the offering, at the very least, for Mourinho. After all, it was his Inter side's victory in the Champions League that helped Serie A avoid the humiliation of losing a Champions League spot.
