World Cup 2010 Preview: Spain Is Ready

Jon SainzJun 9, 2010

After two average games against Saudi Arabia and Korea Republic, Spain's starters showed against Poland that they are ready for the World Cup.

The team played as a unit, even the new guys looked like they had been playing together for a long time.

That might be because of the quality of all the players. If one doesn't shine, somebody else does—it's a good thing to have so many world-class players.

This time it was Iniesta's and Xabi Alonso's turn to shine. They both did a lot of things and had chances to score, but of the two only Xabi Alonso did.

Spain has a lot of talent and a lot of guys who are able to score, that was confirmed in yesterdays game, when nobody scored twice, and Spain managed to score six times.

Goals were made by Villa (min 12), Silva (min 14), Xabi Alonso (min 51), Cesc Fabregas (min 57), Torres (min 75), and Pedro (min 80).

This last one who holds the record for scoring in most competitions in one year with Barcelona (La Liga, Cup, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup, Champions League, and Club World Cup), has now also scored with the national team, and is looking forward to do so again in South Africa.

The match was good for a number of reasons, other than the final 6-0 score. Some players who were injured not so long ago, like Torres, showed that hey are recovered and ready for the World Cup.

Some records were also broken: Xabi Alonso played his 69th match with the national team and is the 10th player with most caps, Cesc Fabregas played his 50th game, and is the youngest player to get to that number. Also, Spain is going to South Africa after not being defeated for 12 straight games.

The sad part of the match was Iniesta's injury, but as it turned out it's just a minor muscular problem, so he will be playing in the upcoming games.
