Time For The Big 12 To Be Proactive

Jared DavisJun 7, 2010

With news that the Big 12 might be on the verge of collapse, it’s time for the Big 12 to have an aggressive back-up plan. Given that they are currently a BCS conference, they have the opportunity to build a very strong alternative conference for some of the teams that will be left out in the cold.

Based on current predictions, there are very few teams that seem “stuck” in the Big 12:

1.     Iowa State

2.     Kansas

3.     Kansas State

4.     Baylor

I would also anticipate seeing Nebraska in on that list, but we’ll just assume these 4 will all be available.

If I ran the Big 12, here’s who I’d invite:

1.     Boise State

2.     Utah

3.     BYU

4.     TCU

5.     Houston

That gives you a 9-team conference of the strongest mid-major teams all in a geographically-acceptable spread. Keeping it to 9 teams would also leave an open door for any of the Big 12 teams that get left standing when the music stops.  And since it looks like the name “Big10” might be up grabs soon, another team would be great.
