2010 French Open: Samantha Stosur Sinks Serena Williams
Australian tennis fans can have faith in one of their own: Samantha Stosur.
The Australian wonder defeated world No. 1 Serena Williams today in a stunning upset at the women's singles quarterfinals of the French Open.
The exhilarating three set battle ended Serena Williams' run at Roland Garros, Paris, while sparking the Australian nation's hope that Stosur would be the first Australian woman to win the French Open since 1973.
Let's take a look at Stosur's journey through this year's French Open that got her to this point.
Her first-round opponent was Simona Halep, who Stosur defeated handily in straight sets to get her tournament off to a nice start.
Rossana De Los Rios gave her more of a challenge in the second-round after Stosur lost the first set 4-6.
Stosur came storming back winning the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0. This gave her the confidence that if she fell behind, she would have the will to come back and snatch a victory.
The third-round brought Anastasia Pivovarova, who Stosur defeated in another straight set victory, 6-3, 6-2.
After an impressive journey to get to the fourth-round, Stosur had to face a women's singles giant and legend, Justine Henin.
Henin had previously won the French Open an amazing four times and is considered one of the best tennis players of this generation.
Stosur had a large obstacle to overcome and once again proved that she was up for the challenge.
After being downed by Henin 6-2 in the first set of competition, Stosur roared back once again, winning the next two sets 6-1, and 6-4.
This was an enormous victory for Stosur, but she could not let up yet.
Now into the quarterfinals of competition, Serena Williams was the next legend standing in the way of her dream of winning the French Open title.
This was arguably Stosur's biggest match of her career and she did not disappoint.
It was one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament and it lived up to the hype.
Serena Williams was always the favorite to win on paper, but games are not won on paper. They are won by sheer determination and the will to accomplish great things.
It took extra games in the third and final set to decide a winner, but Stosur came out on top after taking the third set 8-6.
Her semifinal competition will be Jelena Jankovic. If she defeats Jankovic, Stosur will be one step closer to a dream come true for any professional tennis player.
With an entire nation behind her, Samantha Stosur will look to continue her inspiring run for a French Open title.
