The NFL said it is investigating an exchange between an official and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride from Sunday's 36-24 win for the New York Giants, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The NFLPA's executive director, JC Tretter, publicly called for accountability following the incident.

"This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable," Tretter said on social media. "Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."

CBS Sports' Aditi Kinkhabwala noted that McBride was polite when starting the exchange, even using the word "please."

It was one of several interactions between an official and either a player or coach that came under scrutiny on Sunday.

There was referee Adrian Hill being clearly angry with Eric Wilson after the Minnesota Vikings linebacker inadvertently knocked him over.

And Mike Vrabel was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for using some colorful language, a ruling that surprised him.

"I told him it was a terrible—I'm not going to say effing—call," Vrabel told reporters. "I've said that 87 times since I've been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You'd have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive."

The relationship between officials and both players and coaches is always a bit charged. But on Sunday it seemed even more confrontational than usual.
