Brownie Bites: Notable Quotes From Your Cleveland Browns (5/25/10)

Daniel WolfMay 24, 2010

This is the time of the year in the NFL where information can very hard to come by and fortunately, via aggressive Internet research, I have located several very interesting quotes and information from some of your Cleveland Browns players from the past week-ish.

Scott Fujita to Wear an Unlikely Jersey Number

The NFL allows certain positions to only wear certain numbers and according to the Browns' official Web site, newly acquired linebacker Scott Fujita could not reclaim any of his former numbers so he went with the No. 99 which is usually worn by the men in the trenches on the defensive line.

“There were no ‘50’ numbers available when I got here and I didn’t want to try and punk some younger guy for a number," Fujita told the Browns' site. "I called my family, put it to a vote with my friends and family and kids, and they all chose 99. I’ve got twin girls, twin numbers.”

Fujita is allowed to wear the number even though it looks strange since it is usually a number worn by the bigger 300-pounders.

Despite Initial Shock of Trade to Cleveland, Sheldon Brown is Now a Teacher

According to an undisclosed source who is close to new cornerback Brown, he was not too excited about relocating to Cleveland since he has been in Philadelphia for his entire career.

Understandable because it cannot be easy to just up and move to a new city once someone has been settled for the past eight years.

Brown has been a starter for the Eagles the past six seasons and he has now stepped in to become the mentor of a young group of cornerbacks who have never had a mentor yet.

“Joe [Haden's] been great,” said Brown to the Browns' site. “He’s one of those guys that grabbed me immediately, as soon as I walked in, and he’s willing to learn and listen. He kind of reminds me of when I came in."

This will only help three-year starter Eric Wright and first-round pick Joe Haden get better not only in 2010, but for the future too.

Jake Delhomme Just Wants to Win

Delhomme has found success in the NFL, taking the Panthers to a Super Bowl and nearly beating the Patriots in a fourth quarter comeback attempt when he threw two touchdown passes.

Since his arrival, there have been nothing but positive things said about the veteran quarterback and he is here in Cleveland to play the game for one reason, and one reason alone.

“I just want to be a part of helping turn this thing around,” said Delhomme to the Browns' site. “I’m 35 years old, I’m going into my 14th NFL season. I play this game for one reason and one reason only, to win."

Not only is it nice to have a confident veteran leading this team and offense, but hearing that all he wants to do is win sounds like music to all Browns fans' ears.

Seneca Wallace Says He'll Do Everything Asked of Him

Wallace was brought to Cleveland by his former head coach and Browns team president Mike Holmgren to add more veteran presence to a quarterback position that has been highly questioned over the past few years.

Even though he will need to learn a mostly new offensive system (there are sprinkles of some West Coast offense influence in it), Wallace will do everything he can to help his new team.

“My first thing is to come here and compete to be the quarterback. That’s what I want to do," said Wallace to the Browns' site. "I have to keep learning, keep getting better. If they ask me to do other things, go on the field and play Wildcat or whatever it is, I am always open-minded to that."

It has been highly publicized that both Wallace and Josh Cribbs will see time together in the Wildcat formation and Wallace just brings a new dimension to the offense instead of just standing on the sidelines holding a clipboard like most of the other NFL backup quarterbacks.

Jason Trusnik on Signing His RFA Contract Tender

"I just know that I needed to be here," Trusnik said to Cleveland.com writer Terry Pluto. "I know how hard it is to make the league and how hard it is to stay here."

Can you blame Trusnik for signing his $1.7 million, one-year deal?

He only made $460,000 in 2009.

D'Qwell Jackson Tweets to His Fans

"I appreciate all the concern about my situ(ation) with the browns & to the fans I will be a brown this year."

Then just sign your one-year tender already and play your heart out in 2010 to get your long-term deal you so desire.

To Close...Wise Words from Browns General Manger Tom Heckert

"It's like that with everybody," said Heckert to Cleveland.com regarding unsigned players wanting to get traded (specifically LB Matt Roth's request). "Normally when guys are unhappy with their contract, the first thing out of their mouth is 'give me a new deal or trade me.' It isn't the first time we've heard that and it won't be the last."
