Gianluigi Buffon: The Man To Take Arsenal Back To Winning Ways?

Snide CommentsMay 14, 2010

The season is over for Arsenal, therefore, the silly season cycle begins.

First, everyone looks at what Arsenal didn't do right during the season, that prolonged  the trophy drought.

Next, positions that were weak during the season and what Arsene Wenger could have done to prevent that.

The next step is, who Arsene Wenger could bring in to strengthen the weak positions.

The final part of the cycle is the most impossible part with Arsene Wenger, which is actually signing the player he is "reportedly" interested in.

Luckily for us we are at the part of the cycle where names pop-up.

This name however, is Gianluigi Buffon.

The most surprising part is that it was here on the Arsenal website, where Arsenal.com have decided to add lists of players that will be linked this summer ( I bet you it will grow every time you hit refresh.)

The Italian international and Juventus keeper is no doubt one of the best shot stoppers of his time, winning the Serie A best keeper award a record nine times.

Unlike many current Arsenal players he is a capped international that has actually won something at the highest level. The World Cup.

Buffon's achievement speak volumes and he will most definitely be welcomed at Arsenal to replace the clowns who currently stand between the sticks, Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.

Buffon is a very loyal player to Juventus having spent nine years with them, winning the league, cup and getting to the Champions League finals in 2003.

But a dreadful league season, no Champions League, three managerial changes, three presidential changes and poor defense might make him jump ship if Arsenal make a concrete bid.

Manchester United and City are said to be interested, but Arsenal might just do enough to snare the experienced keeper.

Arsene Wenger recently stated his need to strengthen his "average" defense and with William Gallas said to leave, signing Buffon could just persuade a mass change of heart from unhappy players like Fabregas, Arshavin and Gallas.

Whatever happens in the nearest future, the World Cup will play a big role in how mush Arsene Wenger really needs the player, if another shot stopper doesn't cross his path.

The fans await a summer signing.
