Arsenal Transfer Prospect: Should Arsene Wenger Re-Sign Sol Campbell?
When the January transfer window came along during 2009/2010., many believed Arsene Wenger would line up a move for a quality, technical striker. The Arsenal manager had had his forward line seriously malnourished thanks to injury, and with Arsenal struggling to keep ground with Chelsea and Manchester United, fans and critics alike expected a new face.
But the only face to arrive certainly wasn't new—it was the calm and composed presence of Sol Campbell. It was a huge shock to all of the footballing world. Why would Wenger want to re-sign an aging 35-year-old center half who'd already played for the Gunners?

Campbell had been training with the North Londoners in a bid to keep his fitness at a prime after leaving his exclusive deal with Notts County. The Englishman's impressive performance on the training ground ensured Wenger re-signed his former employee.
Many were skeptical about the new arrival. Surely there was no way Sol Campbell was still capable of performing in the Premier League, especially at a side like Arsenal. But it didn't take long for the former English international to whip up some delicious humble pie.
From the word go, Campbell put in some assured performance proving he was still a strong, imposing centre half. Then when the usual injury toll became evident and a season-ending injury was suffered by former captain William Gallas, up stepped Sol Campbell to fill the gaping hole.
Campbell impressed greatly putting in enthusiastic, solid efforts, causing some to contemplate whether he deserved a spot in the England World Cup squad. Campbell showed leadership, strength, and credible decision making. But now Campbell's contract has come to a close and it is time for Wenger to decide whether to offer the former Portsmouth captain a new contract.
With the future of fellow defenders William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, and Philippe Senderos all uncertain, coupled with the rumors that there will be new defensive blood to the Emirates, as well as the return of boom youngsters Harvard Nodtveit and Kyle Bartley, there is a haze over Sol Campbell's future.
Campbell would provide a great deputy for Thomas Vermaelen and Johan Djourou, as well as incorporating extra strength and experience for the younger, developing defenders.
It would be silly for Wenger to pass up Sol Campbell especially after his efforts this season.
