Barcelona Defeat Sevilla and Edge Closer to La Liga Title

Ehab El JundiMay 8, 2010

In one of the most entertaining football nights in Europe, Barcelona played Sevilla, while Real Madrid were facing Athletic Bilbao. The importance of the game was that this is the last difficult match Barcelona are facing, and they are roundly considered the league champions should they win this fixture away from the Camp Nou.

The game started in a very positive way for Barcelona as Messi, for the umpteenth time, opened the scoreline with a very nice receive-twist-shoot combination from the best player in the world, in the fourth minute. Soon followed the second goal from the impressive Bojan.

This was happening as Real Madrid conceded a goal that brought their own game to a tie with Bilbao. As it stood at that time, it looked like Barcelona are cruising to the league title hassle-free. This belief was vindicated with the third goal coming from Pedro. Ibra must have been watching with interest, as the three short men showed him how goals are scored.

Suddenly, Barcelona slacked and took their combined feet off the paddle, to allow Sevilla to score two consecutive goals through Kanoute and Fabiano. At the same time, Real Madrid started stacking up goals against Bilbao.

All of a sudden, the combined events on both pitches gave the viewer the impression that Barcelona are giving away the title to one of the most exciting comebacks in the past few months! An Arsenal Deja Vu.

However, as Barcelona started slowing down the pace of the match, they were able to avoid a killer goal, and as a result earned their 96th point, and barring a highly surprising upset in the final day, Barcelona will be crowned as the champions of Spain. Much to Madrid's dismay, their very impressive win against Bilbao, Score ended up being 5-1, might prove meaningless if Barcelona achieve the expected and win their final fixture.

It was a nerve-wrecking night for La Liga fans, as the wheel of fortune looked like reversing direction and going Madrid's way. However, at the end it didn't. At least not tonight.
