Chelsea Host Wigan: Will It Be 19 Premier League Titles for Manchester United?

Snide CommentsMay 7, 2010

With the English Premier League entering its final week, many players and managers might have written the season off as a bad one.

Tottenham Hotspur secured a champions League berth during the penultimate week against Manchester City. Burnley, Hull City, and Portsmouth are relegated and almost everyone else has nothing to play for but four teams; Manchester United, Chelsea, Stoke City, and Wigan Athletic who decide the winner of the Premier League on the last day.

Chelsea leads the table with 83 points.

Manchester United are right behind then with 82 points.

Only a win will do it for Manchester United, provided Chelsea lose or draw.

For Wigan Athletic, this is the second chance they had to alter history.

First Chance

In 2007, the table looked set to be decided on Goal Difference with Chelsea and Manchester United tied at 84 points heading into the final weekend, with goal differences of +56 and +39 respectively.

Heading into the final game day, Manchester United faced Wigan and Chelsea faced Bolton Wanderers.

Chelsea ended up drawing the game 1-1, while Manchester United won the game 2-0, courtesy of a Ronaldo penalty and a Giggs goal on the 80th minutes to ensure United their second trophy in a row, 17th overall( which will later become three in a row and record equaling 18).

Wigan Athletic where no match for United then and might be no match for Chelsea now, but a few things have changed for the Lancashire based team who look to stop Chelsea from winning the league.

Second Chance

The current Wigan squad might have not achieved a higher status than this season, but you have to consider the fact they lost Antonio Valencia, Wilson Palacios, and Emile Heskey.

The amazing thing about this season for the lactics is their wins against considerably stronger opposition, even the addition of Hugo Rodallega and Manager Roberto Martinez.

Taking three points against Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, where other teams have failed gives United a little window of hope.

Chelsea will be looking to seal the deal and steal all three points and maybe try to emulate London rivals by smacking nine against them.

Whatever outcome, it will surely be a a nervy contest in both stadiums.
