Chester Taylor, The 2nd Coming Of Edgar Bennett

Michael GibbonsMar 7, 2010

I know a lot of people are drinking the orange and blue Kool-aid right now after the Bears coughed up a lot of cash to sign Julius Peppers, Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna but I am being a little more realistic.

I like the the signing of Peppers and Manu is a nice guy to add since he knows Martz's offense and might help with protecting the franchise, Jay Cutler. However the Taylor signing I'm not that big of a fan.

Taylor has been a career backup with only one season as the go to guy during his eight seasons. He also will be turning 31 within the first quarter of the season.

I understand why some people like the signing because he doesn't have a lot of miles on those legs, a good blocker according to Lance Briggs and his signing makes a division rival weaker. He also has stayed healthy with no injury concerns.

All I keep thinking about with this signing is Edgar Bennett.

Edgar was known as a Bears killer. I never understood why teams sign guys who play well against them it never works out, I'm sure Cubs fans remember Jeff Blauser.

Bennett came to the Bears from the Green Bay Packers. The one big difference between Taylor and Bennett is that Edgar was coming to the Bears after tearing his ACL.

Bennett, even though he was the starter most of his time with the Packers was always sharing carries and only had one season over 1,000 yards. He was brought in to help lessen the load that was going to be put on rookie Curtis Enis while Taylor is coming to push Matt Forte and either beat him out for the starting job or give him a durable backup.

Bennett played 8 seasons while this upcoming season will be Taylor's 9th and their numbers have very similar.

Edgar playing only 7 season since he missed one whole season due to injury. He racked up 3,992 yards on 1,115 carries averaging 3.6 yards with 21 touchdowns. Also he was a descent pass catcher with 284 catches for 2,245 with 10 receiving touchdowns.

Taylor on the other hand in his 8 seasons has 4,396 yards on 1, 028 carries for a 4.3 yard average with 22 touchdowns. Taylor also isn't bad at catching the ball with 265 catches for 2,094 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Maybe Taylor proves me wrong and comes in beats out Forte for the starting job on his way to a great season.

I personally would have liked to see the Bears spend the money they did on Taylor on a safety like Antrel Rolle and maybe fill the backup role with someone like Justin Fargas who was just released by the Raiders.
