A light-heavyweight rematch between Stephan Bonnar (11-7) and Krzysztof Soszynski (19-9-1) is in the works for The Ultimate Fighter season 11 finale on June 19 in Las Vegas, NV, according to a report from MMAmania.com.
Bonnar and Soszynski will look to finish what they started after their first bout ended controversially at UFC 110 last month. Following two close rounds, which many fans thought they split, Soszynski was awarded the third-round TKO win after an inadvertent headbutt opened up a deep gash on Bonnar's forehead, which prompted a stoppage.
Bonnar has openly voiced his displeased with referee John Sharp for missing the inadvertent headbutt, and is currently appealing the loss in hopes that the decision is reversed to a technical draw or a no contest.
The loss was Bonnar's third straight - previous losses have been to Jon Jones and Mark Coleman. However, he is not in danger of being cut from the UFC, as company president Dana White has often said that Bonnar and Forrest Griffin would be with the UFC forever.
Bonnar and Griffin gained that comfy job security with the UFC after their exciting fight in the light-heavyweight finals of The Ultimate Fighter season 1, that garnered national acclaim and is highly regarded among fans as one of the most memorable fights in the history of MMA. The fight was also credited by White as the "most important fight in UFC history."
Bonnar has put together an even 5-5 record in 10 fights with the UFC, scoring notable Octagon wins over the likes of James Irvin, Keith Jardine and Eric Schafer; while suffering notable UFC losses to Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin (x2).
Prior to the win over Bonnar, Soszynski was handed his first UFC loss, when he was defeated by Brandon Vera at UFC 102 in August. Prior to the loss, he had won six straight fights, including wins in his first three bouts in the UFC, over Shane Primm, Brian Stann and Andre Gusmao. Two of his three Octagon wins have earned him "Submission of the Night" honors.
