2010 NFL Mock Draft: Round One

1.  St. Louis Rams:  Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

I know they need help on offense, but you to properly build a team you need quality play on both lines of scrimmage. They addressed the offensive line last year with Jason Smith, bypassing Mark Sanchez. They’ll make another sound decision when they grab Suh, the best defensive player in the country.

2.  Detroit Lions:  Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

They drafted their franchise QB last year, so now it’s time to protect their investment.

3.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

Tampa Bay needs some serious help on defense and adding a top defensive tackle is a good start.

4.  Washington Redskins:  Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

Mike Shanahan won’t likely stick with Jason Campbell as his QB of the future. Campbell could have one year left in him as Clausen develops.

5.  Kansas City Chiefs:  Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

Kansas City needs help on both sides of the ball. They could try to trade down to avoid a big rookie contract. If they stay put they go with the best available, and that’s Berry.

6.  Seattle Seahawks:  Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

I know Pete Carroll said Matt Hasselbeck is his guy, but he’s more the present than the future. Bradford could learn from Hasselbeck for a year or two before taking over the reins.

7.  Cleveland Browns:  Joe Haden, CB, Florida

As much as the Browns need a WR, they’re better served adding a premium cornerback.

8.  Oakland Raiders:  Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland

Al won’t grab the fastest WR in the draft, at least not with this pick. He’ll take this giant (6′7″) to bolster his offensive line.

9.  Buffalo Bills:  Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers

He won’t make up for passing on Michael Oher last year, but it’s a start. Offensive-minded Chan Gailey knows you need strong line play before an offense can hum.

10.  Jacksonville Jaguars, Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama

Playing in the same division with the league’s best QB (Peyton Manning), RB (Chris Johnson), and WR (Andre Johnson), the Jags need to go defense here. McLain is the top inside linebacker in the draft.

11.  Denver Broncos:  Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

The signs are there that Brandon Marshall has played his last game with the Broncos. Bryant would be a nice replacement for their troubled WR.

12.  Miami Dolphins:  Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee

I know Parcels loves to take LBs, but if McClain is gone, there isn’t one worthy of the 12 pick. Instead he gives his defense some help up front with Dan Williams.

13.  San Francisco 49ers:  Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa

The trendy pick would be C.J. Spiller, but they are better served improving in the trenches with Bulaga.

14.  Seattle Seahawks:  Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

Not only did the Seahawks pass on a QB last year, they missed out at tackle. With Williams they will rectify the second of those misses.

15.  New York Giants:  Brian Price, DT, UCLA

The Giants love adding talent to their defensive line. Price will supply depth at first, and eventually be groomed into a starter.

16.  Tennessee Titans:  Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech

The Titans are much better than their 8-8 record would lead you to believe. Yes, their secondary was terrible, but a good chunk could be attributed to injuries. Where they need to improve is getting after the quarterback. Morgan will help.

17.  San Francisco 49ers:  Taylor Mays, S, Southern Cal

Mays is the second best safety in the draft, and defensive-minded Mike Singletary will love him. Plus, the Ronnie Lott comparisons will charge the fan base.

18.  Pittsburgh Steelers:  Earl Thomas, S, Texas

While the Steelers could use depth at RB, they can get that later. Pittsburgh was lost without Troy Polamalu this year so Safety is a position they must address. Thomas had an outstanding year for Texas picking off eight passes.

19.  Atlanta Falcons:  Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida

While they need a CB, they are better suited grabbing Dunlap here and taking a CB later.

20.  Houston Texans:  C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

Steve Slaton didn’t cut it. Spiller has lightning speed, something Houston is familiar with after facing Chris Johnson twice. They go with a speed demon of their own.

21.  Cincinnati Bengals:  Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame

The Bengals are surprisingly thin at WR. Laveranues Coles did not effectively replace T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Andre Caldwell is solid, but not a No. 2 WR. Chris Henry’s passing took away their big play ability. Golden Tate would be a nice lift to a unit that really could use it.

22.  New England Patriots:  Ricky Sapp, LB, Clemson

I know Bill Belichick doesn’t like to draft LBs early, but he needs to breath life into that unit. Sapp will play OLB for Belichick and get after the QB.

23.  Green Bay Packers:  Everson Griffen, DE, Southern Cal 

The Packers need help on their offensive line, but that can wait. The options available don’t merit a selection here. They need a DE to get after the quarterback, and Griffen can do just that.

24.  Philadelphia Eagles:  Sergio Kindle, DE, Texas

The Eagles have few pressing needs so they go with the best available. That happens to be Kindle. Plus, Andy Reid likes being stocked at DE.

25.  Baltimore Ravens:  Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois

I don’t see the Ravens trading for Brandon Marshall. I’m not sure they deal for Anquan Boldin either. What I do see them doing is taking a talented WR at the end of the first round to boost their shaky WR corps.

26.  Arizona Cardinals:  Brandon Graham, LB, Michigan

Arizona could use an OLB that can put pressure on the QB. Graham recorded 10.5 sacks last year and 26 tackles for loss. He’d be a great addition to a defensive unit that yielded 90 points in two playoff games.

27.  Dallas Cowboys:  Mike Iupati, G, Idaho

The Cowboys are loaded with talent and have few holes. The could, however, use a physical guard like Iupati. He stood out during Senior Bowl, and has the flexibility to play tackle as well.

28.  San Diego Chargers:  Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech

The Chargers have left their cupboards go empty at RB. LT just won’t give them what they need and Darren Sproles won’t cut it as an every down back. Dwyer gives them a big back with decent speed.

29.  New York Jets:  Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern

Defense is the name of the game for the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets. Wootton gives them a DE with good size and toughness.

30.  Minnesota Vikings:  Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State

The Vikings need to upgrade their secondary. Cedric Griffin hurt his knee in the NFC title game. He’s likely to miss a good chunk of the season. Plus, Antoine Winfield would be better served moved to Safety. Robinson, who possesses excellent speed, could slide into a starting slot and bolster their unit.

31.  Indianapolis Colts:  Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

The Colts could use help in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball. Odrick has good size and speed, and should pay dividends right away.

32.  New Orleans Saints:  Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

The Saints made strides on defense this year but could really use another DE to get after the QB. Jason Pierre-Paul, who had a strong showing at the Senior Bowl, fits that bill.
