The Schmitz Index (Week 9)

Keith SchmitzOct 28, 2007

The Schmitz Index has been updated based on previous comments received.  It is not one of the BCS Computer Indexes.

In 1999, I was convinced that Virginia Tech was the best team in the nation (behind QB Michael Vick).  I created the Schmitz Index to prove it.  It didn't work—no matter what I tried, VT was not the #1 team in the nation.

The Schmitz Index ranks the FBS teams on W/L Pct. (50%), Strength of Schedule (25%), a Margin of Victory that collapses runaway scores (15%), Points Scored (5%) and Net Average Yards (5%).  SOS previously looked only at opponents' W/L Pct, and opponent's opponnent's W/L Pct.  Now it looks at their rating on the other categories above as well.
