Lakers News: Luke Walton 'Not Up at Night Wondering' About Julius Randle's Exit
Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton said Tuesday he isn't dwelling on promising forward Julius Randle's departure from the team.
According to The Athletic's Bill Oram, Walton said while it was "tough" to see Randle go, he is focused on looking ahead:
"Julius is in a good spot in New Orleans, and I'm going to be rooting for him to do great and accomplish everything that he wants to. But now that he's gone, I'm not up at night wondering what could have been in our relationship. He moved. You've got your new roster, and you start spending time what you can do with that."
After the Lakers renounced his rights, Randle signed a two-year, $18 million deal with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The 23-year-old Randle spent his first four seasons with the Lakers after they selected him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft out of Kentucky.
Last season was his best, as he averaged 16.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 55.8 percent from the field.
Since L.A. added LeBron James, Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson and JaVale McGee, however, it decided to part ways with the budding star.
Randle has a big opportunity to blossom in New Orleans alongside Anthony Davis.
Before suffering an Achilles injury last season, DeMarcus Cousins put up huge numbers as part of a dominant frontcourt with Davis.
Nikola Mirotic was also highly productive after the Pels acquired him from the Chicago Bulls in February.
With Davis, Mirotic and Randle, New Orleans boasts one of the NBA's top frontcourts, which sets it apart from many of the other top Western Conference teams.
Randle may have 20-10 potential since Davis commands so much of the opposition's attention, but Walton's focus has shifted toward integrating James and getting the Lakers to the playoffs.
