Huddersfield vs. Arsenal: Team News, Preview, Live Stream, TV Info

James DudkoMay 11, 2018

Arsene Wenger will take charge of his final game as Arsenal manager when the Gunners meet Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium on the final day of this Premier League season on Sunday.

Arsenal will aim to end an unwanted run of seven-straight defeats away from home. Wenger's men have yet to take a single point on their travels in 2018 and lost 3-1 away to Leicester City last time out.

By contrast, Huddersfield have secured top-flight status for another season after laudable away draws against champions Manchester City and Chelsea. A 1-1 stalemate with the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday ensured the Terriers will play a second campaign in the Premier League.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner has said his players and staff will perform a guard of honour for Wenger, per Rory Benson of the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

The club is also keen for its supporters to mark the occasion with a show of respect:

Dominic King of the Daily Mail has applauded Huddersfield's commendable intent:

These gestures would be a fitting way to applaud Wenger, who won three league titles and a record seven FA Cups with the Gunners. Those triumphs included league and cup doubles in 1998 and 2002, as well as going the entire league season unbeaten in 2003/04.

However, Huddersfield won't want this to be a serene sendoff for Wenger. The Terriers were beaten 5-0 by the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium back in November, but they have proved they are made of tougher stuff since.

Draws at City and Chelsea were built on rock-solid defensive foundations. Wagner has relied on a back three, with centre-back Christopher Schindler a standout presence.

Yet Schindler should be in for a tough time against in-form Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The former Borussia Dortmund ace has been on a tear since joining the Gunners late in the January transfer window, with Sky Sports Statto charting his efforts compared to the division's leading marksmen:

Aubameyang will be helped if fellow striker Alexandre Lacazette returns to the starting XI after being rested against Leicester.

Arenal's issue will be getting the ball to their star men up top. Midfielders Mesut Ozil, Mohamed Elneny and Santi Cazorla are all expected to miss the game, per the Guardian.

It means the onus will be on Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to create chances.

Wenger may be more concerned about his own team's ability to limit chances. The Gunners will be without injured centre-back Laurent Koscielny, who will also be out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this June after rupturing his Achilles.

HUDDERSFIELD, ENGLAND - JANUARY 30: Laurent Depoitre (20) and Steve Mounie of Huddersfield Town (24) warms up prior to the Premier League match between Huddersfield Town and Liverpool at John Smith's Stadium on January 30, 2018 in Huddersfield, England.

Arsenal's defensive reserves have been thinned further after Konstantinos Mavropanos was sent off against the Foxes. The Greek centre-back missing out means Wenger must choose between Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and the soon-to-retire Per Mertesacker to play in the middle.

Whoever does start will have to deal with the aerial threat posed by Huddersfield strikers Steve Mounie and Laurent Depoitre. Wagner may also use midfielder Dean Whitehead, who, like Mertesacker, is set to retire from playing this summer, per BBC Sport.

Huddersfield have been in fine form, but the relief from staying up could take the edge off against an Arsenal side motivated to give Wenger a fond farewell.
