Report: Manchester City Leading Packed Race for Napoli's £53M Jorginho

Rory MarsdenMay 10, 2018

Manchester City are reportedly front-runners in the race to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho, but Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona are also interested.

According to Jack Gaughan of MailOnline, Napoli are open to selling the 26-year-old this summer for around £53 million, and City are in the market for a Yaya Toure replacement, while Spurs, the Gunners and United have all "watched Jorginho extensively."

Sky Sports Italia (via the Mirror) reported "a €40 million (£35 million) price tag has been discussed" amid interest from Liverpool, and Barca have now entered the running as they look to replace Andres Iniesta.

Even at the higher price reported by Gaughan, Jorginho could be a worthwhile purchase for any of the clubs linked with him.

An Italy international, he has starred for Napoli this season, running the show from the middle of the park as Maurizio Sarri's side have pushed Juventus all the way in the Serie A title race—they look set to fall just short.

Jorginho is a metronomic passer who can control the tempo of play from his central-midfield role, while he also boasts the defensive nous to offer protection to his defence, per WhoScored.com:

It is easy to understand why all the clubs linked would be interested in signing him.

As already mentioned, City and Barca are looking for replacements for long-serving midfielders, as are United, with Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season to join the club's backroom staff.

Arsenal and Spurs could also be set to lose key central stars.

Jack Wilshere's contract expires in June, and Mousa Dembele has been heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, per the Mirror's Darren Lewis and Aaron Flanagan.

Liverpool already have Naby Keita arriving from RB Leipzig this summer, but Emre Can still looks likely to depart with his contract set to expire.
