NBA Rumors: David Griffin, Jerry Stackhouse, Mike Budenholzer Linked to Pistons
David Griffin, Jerry Stackhouse and Mike Budenholzer are reportedly among the names linked to the Detroit Pistons following the firing of president of basketball operations and head coach Stan Van Gundy on Monday, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.
Griffin would likely fill the president of basketball operations or general manager role, while Stackhouse and Budenholzer are both options at head coach.
During his four years at Detroit's helm, Van Gundy posted a 152-176 record and made the playoffs once. The Pistons finished a disappointing 39-43 in 2017-18.
Griffin became the Cleveland Cavaliers' vice president of basketball operations in 2010, and he was named general manager in 2014.
He made several notable moves with the Cavs, including signing LeBron James in free agency and trading for Kevin Love.
Griffin constructed the 2015-16 roster that brought Cleveland its first NBA championship, but his contract was not renewed after the following season.
The 43-year-old Stackhouse is the head coach of the NBA G League's Raptors 905. In 2016-17, he led Raptors 905 to a championship during his first season and was named Coach of the Year.
Stackhouse spent 18 seasons in the NBA as a player. He played parts of five years for the Pistons and was named an All-Star on two occasions with the team.
Budenholzer spent the past five seasons as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and led them to the playoffs in each of his first four campaigns before going 24-58 in 2017-18. All told, Budenholzer went 213-197 with the Hawks and reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2015.
He was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2015, and he is a four-time NBA champion stemming from his stint as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs.
Detroit is in the midst of a two-year playoff drought, and it hasn't won a championship since the 2003-04 campaign.
