Kentucky Derby 2018 Purse: Prize-Money Payout for Each Owner, Horse and Jockey

Adam WellsMay 5, 2018

The first leg of the Triple Crown went in Justify's favor after the Bob Baffert-trained horse won the 2018 Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Weather conditions at Churchill Downs were miserable, with constant rain pouring, leading to a slow track. Justify's winning time of 2:04.20 was the worst by a Derby winner since Super Saver (2:04.45) in 2010.

The big question coming into Saturday was if Justify could become the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby after not racing as a two-year-old.

Baffert, who is now one Derby win away from tying Ben Jones' all-time record of six, said leading up to the race that he knew Justify had the potential to be special after a January workout at Santa Anita Park.

"He just went around there and just did it effortlessly," Baffert told Jason Frakes of the Louisville Courier Journal. "And that’s when I knew he was really cut above the rest. ... Some of these other horses, they struggle through it. But he handled his first work really well."

Last month, Justify won the Santa Anita Derby to solidify his standing as the favorite coming into the Kentucky Derby.

Once the Run for the Roses got started, Justify was in complete control. Jockey Mike Smith settled in behind Promises Fulfilled at the quarter-mile mark before pushing him to the top of the field before coming down the final stretch.

Justify's victory shouldn't come as a surprise based on how the past betting favorites have fared at the Kentucky Derby:

After Justify answered the first big question about not racing prior to 2018, the follow-up will focus on his potential to win the Triple Crown.

There is only a two-week turnaround time between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes on May 19. Justify hasn't had less than three weeks of rest through four races in his still-young career.

Baffert certainly thinks highly of his horse, with this comment after watching Justify triumph on Saturday:

American Pharoah broke the 37-year Triple Crown drought in 2015. Arrogate won the Eclipse Award as the best three-year-old male horse in 2016 after winning the Travers Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic.

Putting Justify in that class of horse is certainly high praise, but Baffert's legendary track record speaks for itself.

There wasn't a single horse in the field at Churchill Downs who gave Justify a significant challenge. The Preakness Stakes' field will presumably feature a few new challengers, though Justify has proved himself to be the most dominant thoroughbred in 2018 to this point.
