Derrius Guice Surprised He Slipped to Redskins in 2nd Round: 'Why Me?'
No one was more surprised by Derrius Guice's fall to the end of the second round of the 2018 NFL draft than the former LSU running back.
After the Washington Redskins finally selected Guice No. 59 overall on Friday, he didn't have an answer for what happened in a conference call with reporters.
"It did surprise me because a lot of the things came out of nowhere and weren't true," he said, via ESPN.com. "I just didn't understand why me, out of all people, because I'm great to everybody, I have a great personality, and I just didn't understand why everything just hit so hard with me out of everybody."
Sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Guice was seen by teams as "immature, high-maintenance. His visits did not go well. Some incidents in college teams found out about that were not reported."
After being asked about reports of an altercation with Philadelphia Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley, Guice told reporters his visit with the team "was great."
Washington head coach Jay Gruden was also asked about the reported incident with Staley after selecting Guice.
"We don't know anything about that. ...but he assured us there was no [altercation] there at all," Gruden said, via Kimberley A. Martin of the Washington Post.
Guice was seen as a potential first-round talent by some evaluators. B/R's Matt Miller had him rated as the 29th-best prospect in this class on his final big board and projected him to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round in his final mock draft.
