Broncos Draft Rumors: Denver Receiving Calls from Teams Interested in No. 5 Pick

Kyle NewportApr 25, 2018

As everyone waits to see how the top of the 2018 NFL draft will shake out Thursday, some teams are apparently looking to get in on the action.

NFL Network's James Palmer reported franchises are calling the Denver Broncos regarding the No. 5 overall pick. This follows a report by The MMQB's Albert Breer that general manager John Elway would look to trade out of the spot if his target quarterbacks were off the board by the time the team went on the clock.

The Buffalo Bills (Nos. 12 and 22) and Arizona Cardinals (No. 15) have long been rumored to have interest in moving up in the draft to land a top passer. Of course, the New York Jets already swapped places with the Indianapolis Colts to jump into the third slot.

This year's draft could see an early run on quarterbacks. The Cleveland Browns (Nos. 1 and 4) are expected to choose between Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen with the top overall pick. Depending on whom the Browns take, the New York Giants could look to draft Eli Manning's successor at No. 2. And it's unlikely the Jets would have traded up without having eyes on a signal-caller.

As a result, three of the top quarterbacks—which may include Denver's target(s)—could be off the board within the first three picks. While they may be bummed not to get their guy, the Broncos could have the opportunity to dangle their pick as the QB market becomes limited.

Denver signed Case Keenum, who led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game last season, to a two-year deal last month. That gives the team a veteran option under center in 2018 and provides draft flexibility, as the Broncos can feel comfortable enough to trade out and receive a nice haul.

Now, Elway must decide by Thursday night what is in the franchise's best interest.
