Burnley vs. Chelsea: Team News, Preview, Live Stream, TV Info

Tom SunderlandApr 17, 2018

A home win over Chelsea could see Burnley move within five points of the Blues as the two sides clash in a rare Thursday kick-off, with the Clarets still hoping to clinch a UEFA Europa League qualification spot.

Sean Dyche's seventh-placed side welcome Chelsea after winning their last five Premier League games on the bounce—three of which came away from Turf Moor—and with dreams of still catching the Blues in fifth.

If Burnley do finish seventh this season, they stand a decent chance of claiming a Europa League place, although much will depend on who wins the FA Cup, where Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all still in contention.

Manchester City's Carabao Cup win also means the league champions' UEL spot will be handed down to the next-placed side.

Victory on Thursday would see the Clarets temporarily climb above Arsenal into sixth place, at least until the Gunners play host to West Ham United on Sunday, when Burnley will be back in action at struggling Stoke City.

Read on for a preview of Chelsea's midweek trip north, complete with the latest team news and live-stream information.

Team News

Burnley have little fresh injury news ahead of Thursday's game, although Steven Defour remains on their long-term absentee list alongside Robbie Brady and Jonathan Walters.

Dyche spoke to the media last week and confirmed centre-back Ben Mee will be sidelined for the next couple of fixtures, with others out of contention as well:

Chelsea learned at the beginning of April that starlet Ethan Ampadu would miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury, per PhysioRoom.com, which is bad news with David Luiz already sidelined.

A knee injury has limited Luiz to just two Premier League appearances in 2018, and Goal's Nizaar Kinsella provided news on the Brazilian's condition after his most recent update:

Preview

Burnley have managed to upset the odds this season and sustain a challenge for European qualification.

A win on Thursday would lift them above Arsenal, and James Ducker of the Telegraph highlighted this as one of the few dramatic Premier League storylines still to be decided:

Southampton showed Antonio Conte's side can be got at, too, after the west Londoners fell two behind on Saturday before mustering a fine response to emerge as 3-2 winners.

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score two in that revival, and he should start on Thursday amid Alvaro Morata's less reliable form, according to Chelsea writer Mark Worrall:

The Blues came close to going a third successive league fixture without a win, and they've lost three of their last four top-flight away trips.

Burnley beat Chelsea 3-2 on the opening day of the season at Stamford Bridge, and they now look to follow their maiden Premier League win over the capital club by clinching a first double over the Blues.
