La Liga Table 2018: Sunday's Week 31 Results and Updated Standings

Gill ClarkApr 8, 2018

Atletico Madrid held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the Madrid derby on Sunday after Antoine Griezmann cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo's opener.

The point means that Barcelona's lead at the top is now 11 points with just seven games left to play, and manager Ernesto Valverde's side have a firm grip on the title.

Elsewhere, Levante gave their survival hopes a huge boost with a 2-1 win over Las Palmas. The win leaves them eight points clear of Deportivo La Coruna in the final relegation place and should be enough to keep them up.

Sunday Recap

Real Madrid were frustrated by local rivals Atletico yet again at the Santiago Bernabeu, as manager Diego Simeone's side walked away with a point. Atletico are unbeaten in their last five La Liga trips to Real, per Opta:

The hosts had the better of the first half and forced goalkeeper Jan Oblak into several good stops. They were also unfortunate not to have won a penalty after Juanfran clashed with Toni Kroos in the penalty area.

ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan showed how there was some debate over the decision:

Marcelo hit the woodwork for the hosts with a superb shot, but Real Madrid had to wait until the 53rd minute before they could finally open the scoring.

The goal came from the left, where Gareth Bale made space for a cross and found Ronaldo, who volleyed his 650th career goal past Oblak:

Atletico Madrid responded quickly, and Griezmann restored parity within four minutes. The Frenchman fed Vitolo in the area, and although Keylor Navas came out to deny him, the ball fell to Griezmann to fire home.

Opted showed Griezmann's impressive record at the Bernabeu:

Real Madrid came close to a winner late on, but Oblak saved Sergio Ramos' free-kick as both sides had to settle for a point.

At the bottom of the table, Levante's dramatic 2-1 win over Las Palmas at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia looks to have secured their La Liga status.

Coke had put the hosts ahead, but David Garcia headed Las Palmas' equaliser five minutes after the break.

A dramatic finale then saw goalscorer Coke sent off in the 86th minute. However, Levante kept going and scored a stoppage-time winner through Jose Campana.

Football journalist David Cartlidge explained how coach Paco Lopez has been crucial to their survival:

It was an incredible finish by Levante and is bad news for Malaga, Las Palmas and Deportivo La Coruna, who all look certain to be relegated.

Sunday's final game saw Valencia earn a narrow 1-0 win over Espanyol at the Estadio Mestalla. The win sees manager Marcelino's side leapfrog Real Madrid into third place in the table.

Rodrigo Moreno scored the only goal of the game after seven minutes. Goncalo Guedes crossed from the right, and the forward headed home at the back post.

It's a good win for Valencia and sets them up nicely for their next fixture, which sees them head to the Camp Nou to take on unbeaten leaders Barcelona.
