College Basketball Recruiting 2018: Where Will Top Uncommitted Players Land?
Men's college basketball's 2018 recruiting cycle has reached the all-important closing stretch, and a handful of top-50 prospects remain on the board.
Highlighted by a trio of 5-stars, the best available players all have immediate-impact potential. Of the five uncommitted talents ranked in the top 50, three are guards and two are forwards.
Most of the standouts have narrowed their list to a few schools, and they're nearing a decision about where to play in 2018. We're projecting which program will secure that signature.
Note: Anfernee Simons has announced his intent to enter the NBA draft, and Darius Bazley is skipping college in favor of the G League. Both are top-50 prospects but are omitted for those reasons.
Courtney Ramey, Point Guard
1 of 4247Sports composite ranking: 40
Player profile: Once committed to Louisville, Courtney Ramey backed off his verbal pledge in September 2017 shortly after news of the FBI investigation broke. The 6'3", 170-pound point guard is a confident slasher who displays great vision, and he's active as a rebounder, too. Ramey is an average three-point shooter but is still a long-range threat.
Schools involved: His recruitment is wide-open. Ramey has officially visited Oklahoma State and Texas, but his father told Evan Daniels of 247Sports he's still being courted by over a dozen schools. Those include Illinois, Missouri, Ohio State and South Carolina in addition to Oklahoma State and Texas.
Prediction: Missouri. Although Illinois is pushing hard for him, Brad Underwood and Co. have a backup plan in JUCO guard Andres Feliz. There's enormous opportunity at Missouri since the team is losing top-scoring guards Kassius Robertson and Jordan Barnett. That may be enough to draw Ramey to Columbia.
Brandon Williams, Point Guard
2 of 4247Sports composite ranking: 31
Player profile: Checking in at 6'2" and 185 pounds, Brandon Williams has unteachable aggressiveness. He constantly shows it while attacking the rim and contorting his body to deal with contact. He's liable to go into isolation mode, so the transition from high school to college may involve a few rough games. But Williams can score from anywhere.
Schools involved: Similar to Ramey, Williams was committed to Arizona but opened his recruitment in the FBI investigation's aftermath. Though the Wildcats are still in the chase, they're competing with Arizona State, Gonzaga and Oregon. Kentucky also recently reached out, per ESPN's Jeff Goodman.
Prediction: Oregon. Gonzaga is both an intriguing fit and needs reinforcements in the backcourt, but Oregon has made Williams the No. 1 priority since his decommitment. Williams would join Bol Bol and Louis King, a couple of 5-stars, in a stacked UO class.
Jordan Brown, Power Forward
3 of 4247Sports composite ranking: 16
Player profile: As one of the most effective players at the McDonald's All-American Game, Jordan Brown amassed 26 points and eight rebounds. The March 28 showcase featured his tremendous ability to score around the rim, which was seen in a variety of layups and hook shots. At 195 pounds, Brown must add weight in preparation for college, but he'll be a challenge for slow-footed post players to defend.
Schools involved: He's officially visited UCLA, St. John's, Cal and Louisiana Lafayette, and Arizona or Stanford are expected to receive his fifth trip, per SNY.tv's Adam Zagoria. Oregon has also been connected to Brown, so there are plenty of interested teams still chasing him—and the list may only grow with late-arriving suitors.
Prediction: Stanford. If Arizona can manage to land Brown, that would be a huge moment for the program because it'll bring a shred of respectability back to Tucson. Cal is also a foreseeable pick, but Stanford will be in a great position if the staff can get Brown on campus.
Romeo Langford, Shooting Guard
4 of 4247Sports composite ranking: 5
Player profile: Romeo Langford gets buckets. Whether he's spotting up, pulling jumpers off the dribble or slashing, the 6'5" shooting guard is a hugely productive shooter. Interestingly, there's a calm nature to his game. Langford is quietly explosive, and he's adept at taking advantage of open space without being particularly flashy.
Schools involved: In November, he named Indiana, Kansas and Vanderbilt as his finalists. That remains true, according to Mike Pegram of 247Sports. He took official trips to each of the schools in September or October last year and has since unofficially visited Indiana and Vanderbilt. Kansas coach Bill Self has checked in on Langford three times in 2018, per the prospect's recruiting profile.
Prediction: Kansas. Indiana's home-state draw cannot be overlooked, and Vanderbilt has put together its best-ever recruiting class (No. 7). But with Devonte' Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk and Malik Newman all leaving, Langford can slide into a regular role with an established powerhouse expected to contend for the 2019 championship.
