Matt Barnes Recruiting Kings, Warriors Players for Stephon Clark Rally
Retired NBA forward Matt Barnes is trying to gather support from Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings players for a rally over the death of Stephon Clark.
Per USA Today's Sam Amick, Barnes explained he's going to speak with players from both teams prior to their game on Saturday at the Golden 1 Center.
"I know the Warriors and the Kings both play that night, so I'm going to try to talk to both sides and, you know, the game at this point kind of doesn't really matter," he said. "The (playoff) positions are already set, so I'm hoping (the Warriors) can come out and support."
Amick noted there will be a rally for Clark at Cesar Chavez park on the same day the Warriors and Kings play.
Clark, a 22-year-old Sacramento native, was shot and killed by police officers in his grandmother's backyard on March 18.
Per CNN, police thought Clark was pointing a gun at them when they opened fire, but investigators said they only found a cellphone near his body.
Clark's death has led to protests throughout the city, including two outside of the Golden 1 Center before Kings games against the Atlanta Hawks on March 22 and Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.
The Kings addressed the situation in a statement released through Twitter on Wednesday:
The Kings also announced a partnership with Black Lives Matter Sacramento and the Build. Black. Coalition to invest in black youth in the community.
Barnes, who played 74 games with the Warriors and Kings last season, attended Clark's funeral on Thursday and told Amick he's provided the Clark family with support and assistance.
