Per the Daily Mail's Danny Gallagher, the fighting commenced when Partizan fans realised Red Star supporters were sitting in their home section. They ripped clothes off the visiting fans before police responded. Stonehouse, on the other hand, attributed the animosity to opposing Partizan groups.

As flares clouded the air, Red Star's Richmond Boakye scored a late equaliser that led to a 1-1 draw.
