Scary Scene at MMA Weigh-In as Barely Conscious Fighter Is Carried onto Scale
UFC lightweight Kevin Lee drying himself out to make the 155-pound weight limit for Saturday's UFC 216 bout vs. Tony Ferguson reignited discussion about dangerous weight-cutting practices in MMA.
An even scarier weigh-in took place in Tokyo with Brazil's Daniel Lima de Carvalho, who competed at Pancrase 290.
Check out the video of him hitting the scale.
It's a terrifying sight, seeing him being helped onto the scale by his entourage, who didn't seem confident he could even stand under his own power. Worse yet, even after this, he still competed, dropping a unanimous decision to Daichi Kitakata on Sunday.
Speaking with MMA Fighting, Lima said: "Since it was my first time outside of Brazil and I had no experience, I thought it would be easy. It was tough, painful." He added that he was "100 percent for the fight."
Multiple fighters have died making extreme weight cuts over the years, and even those who don't have trouble getting on the scale could face health issues down the line. While this issue has yet to hit the UFC in a major way, many expect it's only a matter of time.
