Jordan Spieth to Skip 2017 John Deere Classic for 2nd Straight Year

Timothy RappJul 3, 2017

Jordan Spieth announced Monday that he would miss the John Deere Classic for the second consecutive season, per PGATour.com:

"I’m sorry I won’t be at this year’s John Deere Classic. I love the tournament, I love the golf course, and, more importantly, I love the people. Clair [Peterson, the tournament director], his staff, the fans—the entire community—everyone involved makes that event such a special stop for the PGA TOUR. While my schedule doesn’t permit me returning to the Quad Cities this year, I plan to be back in the future."

Spieth, 23, won the tournament twice in his career (2013, 2015) and finished tied for seventh in 2014. In total, he is 55 under at the tournament. He skipped the tournament last year as well, as it coincided with the Olympics. While Spieth didn't participate in the Rio Games, he "said he felt it would be inappropriate to play in the Quad Cities the same week," per PGATour.com.

While Spieth has had a slight drought at the majors, last winning one at the U.S. Open in June 2015, he's nonetheless posted a solid season, winning two tournaments—including last week's Travelers Championship—and has added six top-10 finishes.

Skipping the John Deere Classic could give Spieth the opportunity to play for the Open Championship at the Royal Birkdale starting July 20, however, and end that major drought. The John Deere Classic begins July 10.

The tournament will have its share of big names, however, as Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, K.J. Choi, Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker, among others, will be in the mix.
