Wednesday Recap
Zambia looked to be cruising into the quarter-finals as their clash with Germany ticked towards the final minutes.
Having started sloppily and gone 1-0 down to Philipp Ochs' brilliant 37th-minute free-kick, Zambia responded in fine fashion after the break to go 3-1 ahead through goals from Emmanuel Banda, Fashion Sakala and Enock Mwepu.
However, Germany did not give up, and when Suat Serdar's 89th-minute strike was followed by Jonas Arweiler's goal in the fourth minute of added time they had forced extra time.
It was Zambia, though, who scored what proved to be the final and decisive goal of a thrilling game, Shemmy Mayembe netting in the 107th minute to earn an historic place in the last eight, per FIFA:
England survived a late scare to proceed to the quarters as they saw their 2-0 lead cut in half in the 89th minute as Randall Leal turned home a rebound after seeing his penalty saved.
The Young Lions saw out the victory, though, and were indebted to Lookman, who scored either side of half-time to leave Costa Rica with too much to do.
His first goal in the 35th minute was set up by Jonjoe Kenny and the second 18 minutes after the break came from close range following a Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivery.
Per FIFA, not since 1993 have England made it to the quarter-finals of an U-20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Uruguay maintained their impressive record of not conceding a single goal at the South Korea tournament as they saw off Saudi Arabia in the first knockout round.
A first half packed with opportunities, mainly for La Celeste, nevertheless ended goalless, and only De La Cruz's powerful spot-kick could separate the sides in the end, coming after a Saudi handball five minutes into the second half.
