ACC Announces Return of League Championships to North Carolina After HB2 Repeal
The ACC announced Wednesday that league championship games will return to the state of North Carolina across multiple sports in 2017-18.
According to the ACC's official website, the 2017 ACC Championship Game in football will take place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
Championship games in women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's golf, women's soccer and men's and women's tennis will also be held in North Carolina.
The news comes after the March 30 repeal of the HB2 "bathroom bill," which limited the protection of the LGBT community against discrimination.
ACC Commissioner John Swofford commented on the decision to return to North Carolina:
"We are pleased that ACC neutral site championships will return to the state of North Carolina beginning with the 2017-18 academic year. We value all of our partners in North Carolina and appreciate their support and cooperation. We are thrilled to renew our relationships with so many terrific people, outstanding cities and first-class venues.
"
Multiple ACC title games and events were moved from North Carolina in 2016-17 due to HB2.
That included the ACC Championship Football Game, which was instead played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
North Carolina also missed out on the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, as it was held in New Orleans rather than the originally planned host city of Charlotte.
