Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich: Team News, Live Stream, TV Info for UCL Match

James DudkoApr 16, 2017

Holders Real Madrid will reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final provided they can protect a 2-1 lead against Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Bundesliga leaders will arrive in the Spanish capital for the quarter-final first leg still reeling from the Cristiano Ronaldo double they surrendered at the Allianz Arena last Wednesday. However, Bayern could be boosted by the potential return of star striker Robert Lewandowski, who missed last week's match through injury.

Speaking of star attackers, expect Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale to return for Los Blancos after manager Zinedine Zidane left them out of Saturday's 3-2 win over Sporting Gijon in La Liga.

The major team news will naturally focus on whether Lewandowski is fit enough to start. Bayern have certainly missed their prolific No. 9, as they scored just once in the first leg against Real and were held goalless by Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Yet the powerhouse centre-forward has returned to training, according to Bayern's official Twitter account (h/t ESPN FC). A Lewandowski return would be massive for a Munich side still boasting enough firepower to turn this tie around.

Specifically, winger Arjen Robben and playmaker Thiago Alcantara can both cause havoc between the lines for a shaky Real defence. However, things only truly click in the final third for Bayern when Lewandowski is available to be the focal point for his team's delivery.

The Pole could be the difference against a back four weakened by injuries to centre-backs Pepe and Raphael Varane.

Of course, the holders can rely on their own talisman up front being available and on form. Ronaldo made history with his goals in Munich, per the competition's official Twitter account:

Zidane wisely rested Ronaldo against Sporting, leaving him fresh to get started on his next century of UEFA goals in the competition Real value above all others. Ronaldo could again punish a Bayern defence set to be without Javi Martinez, who will serve a suspension after being sent off in the first leg.

Ronaldo will be available, but Bale could miss out as he struggles with a muscular problem, according to Duncan Wright of The Sun. Wright noted the Welsh forward is likely to be rested again in an attempt to get him ready for next weekend's Clasico against Barcelona, a match possibly set to prove decisive in La Liga's title race.

Los Merengues have some genuine injury concerns headed into the second leg, while Bayern may be returning to full strength. However, Zidane's squad is deep, talented and resilient enough to maintain the advantage they earned in Munich.
