La Liga Results 2017: Table, Scores and Reaction After Final Week 29 Match

Rory MarsdenApr 3, 2017

Giuseppe Rossi's first-ever La Liga hat-trick handed Celta Vigo a 3-1 win over Las Palmas on Monday and moved them into the top half of the table.

The Italian netted twice in the first half and added his third after the break to condemn Las Palmas to their 12th defeat of the season—Pedro Bigas pulled one back for the visitors in the 81st minute.

The Balaidos clash drew Week 29 of the season to a close, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all having picked up wins over the weekend.

Rossi had netted just one goal in 15 league appearances for Celta in 2016-17 ahead of Monday's clash with Las Palmas.

Per Squawka, the former Villarreal star's treble was very unexpected:

It came at an excellent time for Celta manager Eduardo Berizzo, with his side hitting some fine form going into the latter stages of the season—they have now won three on the bounce in all competitions.

Rossi opened the scoring after 12 minutes, taking fine advantage of a mistake on the ball from Las Palmas defender Bigas.

He doubled the hosts' lead in the 36th minute as he turned home after Iago Aspas' attempt could only be pushed away by goalkeeper Raul Lizoain.

Just before the hour, Rossi completed his treble as he beat Lizoain with a low effort. Per Opta, he had not netted more than one goal in a single game in La Liga for more than six years:

Nine minutes from time, Bigas netted a bicycle kick from six yards out to claw a goal back for Las Palmas.

However, Celta saw out a comfortable victory in the end, and Rossi is well set to enjoy a fine close to the 2016-17 campaign.
