Sunday Recap

City and Liverpool played out a pulsating encounter at the Etihad, but Adam Lallana missed an easy opportunity late to win the points.

After a goalless first half, the Reds took the lead after 51 minutes when James Milner converted a penalty to surprise the hosts.

Gael Clichy clattered Roberto Firmino in the box, allowing the former Sky Blues player to score against his old club.

JOE.co.uk tipped their hat to the Liverpool penalty king:

The game swung back and forth as City appeared fatigued, but the home team successfully chased the game as Aguero slotted home to make it 1-1 after 69 minutes.

In the closing stages, Lallana and Aguero both spurned excellent opportunities to win the points on offer, but neither man could find a finish.

United climbed to fifth after a gritty display at Boro, with a howler from goalkeeper Victor Valdes settling the match with the last kick of the game.

The visitors opened the scoring as Ashley Young's precise cross met the head of Marouane Fellaini, allowing the Belgian to nod home uncontested at the far post past Valdes.

United doubled their lead in the second half, with Jesse Lingard sprinting clear of the midfield to lash an unstoppable drive into the top corner.

However, Mourinho opted to make a number of tactical changes, placing six players across the back as United sat very deep.

The move invited Boro to attack, and they were rewarded when substitute Rudy Gestede pounced on a Chris Smalling error to find the net with 13 minutes remaining.

Caretaker manager Steve Agnew encouraged his side to take a shock point from the game, but Valdes slipped as he attempted to clear a back pass, allowing Antonio Valencia the easiest of chances to win the game.

Spurs were without the injured Harry Kane for their game against the Saints, but manager Mauricio Pochettino's selections were up to the task as they prevailed 2-1.

Christian Eriksen's opener was soon followed by a spot-kick from Dele Alli, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead after 33 minutes.

James Ward-Prowse scored from close range shortly after half-time to give the south coast club hope, but Spurs remained in the driving seat as they continue to be Chelsea's nearest challengers in the title race.

City's defending once gain let them down, allowing Liverpool too much play in the final third of the pitch.

In an intense match, the visitors dug in and pressured coach Pep Guardiola's side, but a draw was a fair result at the final whistle.

United closed the gap on City and Liverpool on Sunday and are now four points from a top-four berth.
