Tyrone Mings Appears to Stamp on Zlatan Ibrahimovic After Altercation

Rory MarsdenMar 4, 2017

Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings appeared to stamp on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's head during the Cherries' 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Per The Independent's Jack de Menezes, Mings avoided any punishment for the incident in a chaotic end to the first half, as did Ibrahimovic when he seemed to deliberately elbow the 23-year-old in the head at a subsequent corner.

The Telegraph provided an image of the incident:

Referee Kevin Friend did, though, send off Andrew Surman for clashing with Ibrahimovic following the incident, although it took the official some time to realise he had issued the Cherries midfielder with his second yellow card of the game.

Per BBC 5 live Sport, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes both Mings and Ibrahimovic could face retrospective punishment following an action-packed match in Manchester, which saw Bournemouth heroically hang on for a point despite being down to 10 men:

Mings pleaded innocence after the final whistle, as he told Sky Sports (h/t I would never do that; that's not in my game. Hard and fair is my game but not off the ball. He [Ibrahimovic] is who he is. I knew what I was in for. It was a battle. There was maybe an elbow; I didn't see it, I felt it. He's a physical guy, and it was a good test."

However, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher slammed the Englishman's actions at half-time, via Squawka News:

Despite the chaos at the end of the first 45 minutes, Bournemouth will have felt fortunate to have gone in level at the break given how many chances they allowed United.

However, they were compact and well-organised defensively in the second half and deserving of the point they earned, which ended a run of four Premier League defeats on the bounce.

United dominated possession but were unable to carve out any golden chances to win the game in open play.

And when they were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes to go after Adam Smith's handball in the area, Artur Boruc got down well to keep out Ibrahimovic's effort.
