Donnel Pumphrey Breaks Record for Most Rushing Yards in FBS History

Joe PantornoDec 17, 2016

San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey broke the NCAA FBS all-time rushing record of 6,397 set by Wisconsin's Ron Dayne from 1996 to 1999 during Saturday's 34-10 win over Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl:

Pumphrey needed 108 yards entering the game and broke the mark during the fourth quarter with a 15-yard rush. Per NCAA Stats, that put him at 6,402 career rushing yards. Here's a look, via GoAztecs:

He added a three-yard rush to finish with 115 yards on the day and 6,405 for his career.

Pumphrey moved to within 11 of the mark with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter thanks to a 32-yard touchdown, via GoAztecs:

This was the third straight season Pumphrey rushed for more than 1,600 yards, as the senior recorded a career-best 2,018 yards in 13 games before the Las Vegas Bowl:

20131257528
20142761,86720
20153091,65317
20163302,01816

His 2016 mark ranked second in the nation behind D'Onta Foreman of Texas entering Saturday, but he now has the outright lead.

In his first 13 games this season, Pumphrey eclipsed the 100-yard mark 10 times and the 200-yard mark four times.

That included a monstrous 281-yard, three-touchdown performance against Cal on Sept. 10.

However, a technicality in the record books helped Pumphrey. The NCAA began including stats from bowl games in 2002, per Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com. In four career bowl games, Dayne gained 728 yards, which put his actual career mark at 7,125.

He included that number when he congratulated Pumphrey:

The San Diego State rusher would rank third on the NCAA's all-time list if bowl games were included, as Tony Dorsett, who played at Pittsburgh from 1973 to 1976, rushed for 6,526 yards.

But that doesn't take away the playmaking abilities of Pumphrey, who has electrified the Aztecs backfield over four years and helped put the program back on the map in the process.
