ACC Fines Louisville, Virginia Tech for Taking Leaked Info from Tommy Elrod

Adam WellsDec 17, 2016

The ACC's internal investigation into the scandal involving Wake Forest's proprietary game information has led to separate $25,000 fines for Virginia Tech and Louisville.

Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman reported the ACC-issued penalties Saturday. Feldman also noted the dollar amount is the largest the conference's bylaws allow, reporting the money will go into a scholarship account.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford issued a statement about the situation on the conference's official website:

"

I am deeply disturbed something like this would occur, and regardless of the degree of involvement, the protection of the competitive integrity of our games is fundamental to any athletic contest. Sportsmanship and ethical values are at the core of competitive integrity and in these instances, those were missing. The expectation, regardless of the sport, is that any athletics department staff members would immediately communicate with their supervisor if they are approached by someone from another institution with proprietary information.

On Tuesday, per ESPN's Andrea Adelson, Wake Forest issued a statement announcing radio announcer and former assistant coach Tommy Elrod gave or attempted to give opponents information about the team's game plan multiple times dating back to 2014.

Wake Forest's internal investigation began after a football equipment manager found documents showing the team's plays prior to a November 12 game against Louisville. Elrod was fired as a result of the findings.

On Thursday, Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock released a statement announcing a former assistant coach was given information regarding Wake Forest's game plan before a game between the two teams in 2014.

Babcock said the school had "no indication at this time that any of this information was shared with any other staff members, nor utilized during the game itself."

Per David Teel of the Daily Press, former Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said no one on his staff was offered information about Wake Forest prior to the 2014 game.

Louisville suspended co-offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway for the team's Citrus Bowl game against LSU on December 31 for accepting information from Elrod prior to the game against Wake Forest earlier this season, per Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports.

Virginia Tech is also preparing for a postseason game against Arkansas in the Belk Bowl on December 29.
