On October 26, Streeter was originally scheduled to sing the anthem prior to the Sixers' season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder before the team pulled her performance because of the shirt she was wearing.ย
She posted a video on Twitter about the October incident:
Two days after Streeter's scheduled performance, the 76ers issued a formal apology to her for the situation (viaย USA Today):
"We are sorry that this happened.ย After receiving feedback from ourย players,ย basketball operations staffย andย ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing.ย We apologize to her, and in an effort to move the conversation forward, we have reached out toย offer her an opportunity to return and perform at a game of her choice. We are waiting to hear back.
"
On November 6, Streeter and the 76ers told the Associated Press (viaย ESPN.com) she would perform the anthem before their game against the Lakers on December 16.
"After thoughtful conversation, the 76ers and Sevyn Streeter have worked together to develop a plan we hope will bring meaningful action in the Philadelphia Community," the Sixers' statement read.
"I have accepted their apology," Streeter said. "In order to move forward, it was important to me that we take action and use this as an opportunity to create positive change and dialogue throughout the community."
76ers guard Gerald Henderson criticized his team for its decision,ย per ESPN.com'sย Ohm Youngmisuk:
"I didn't think it was right. We talked about it and collectively we thought that was the best decision [to let her sing in the future]. We felt like she should have been able to sing, and for whatever reasons, that didn't happen. I think it is a good idea to reach out to her, and hopefully she can come back and sing her song.
"
Even though the situation started out ugly for the 76ers, it had a strong resolution. Streeter got to perform on a higher-profile stage on a nationally televised ESPN game against the Lakers on a night when Allen Iversonย was being honored for his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year.ย
