Amway College Football Poll 2016: Top 25 Rankings for Week 15

Tyler ConwayDec 4, 2016

Alabama remains at the top. Ohio State is still second. And if the coaches have their say, it appears it'll be Penn State sitting on the outside of this year's College Football Playoff.

The Crimson Tide and Buckeyes are followed by Clemson and Washington in their latest rankings, with Penn State sitting at No. 5. The Nittany Lions entered this week eighth in the Amway Coaches Poll, and their comeback to defeat Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game was not enough to leapfrog them into the Top Four discussion.

Here is a look at how the post-championship Top 25 played out:

The Crimson Tide completed their undefeated regular season with an impressive 54-16 win over Florida. Bo Scarbrough rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, part of an Alabama rushing attack that went for 234 yards on 38 attempts. Florida did an excellent job of holding Jalen Hurts to 139 total yards, but the Tide quarterback gladly took a backseat as the running backs stole the show.

Alabama also added a punt return and interception return for touchdowns.

"This group, we’ve scored more nonoffensive touchdowns this year, I think, than any team I’ve ever been associated with," Saban told reporters. "I think it speaks to the playmaker type guys that we have, the good job the coaches do putting them in position."

With Ohio State idle and Washington taking care of business Friday night against Colorado, the focus turned to Saturday night's ACC and Big Ten championships.

Unfortunately for the playoff committee, Penn State and Clemson both took care of business.

The Nittany Lions set a Big Ten Championship Game record, coming back from 21 points down to earn a 38-31 win over Wisconsin. They outscored the Badgers 24-3 after halftime, continuing a trend of second-half brilliance that has propelled them back into the national spotlight.

It's Penn State's first conference championship since 2008, and the program will be returning to a major bowl for the first time since the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

"What I do know is that we just won the toughest conference in college football," coach James Franklin told reporters. "We've won nine straight. They say you're allowed to overcome minor setbacks. We've done that. It's up to you, committee."

Clemson, meanwhile, got its sixth one-score win of the season, holding on for a 42-35 triumph against Virginia Tech. The Hokies drove to Clemson's 23-yard line on a potential game-winning drive, but Jerod Evans threw an interception on a fourth-down attempt to seal the deal. Deshaun Watson accounted for 373 yards and five touchdowns, perhaps putting himself back in the Heisman race.

"What a blessing to be a part of this journey," coach Dabo Swinney told reporters. "This guy is the best player in the country, and it isn't close."

The movers in this week's poll were relatively few. Temple nudged its way into the Top 25 at No. 24 after defeating Navy in the AAC championship. No other team moved down or up more than three spots.
