Georgetown provided the first stunner of the 2016 Maui Invitational on Monday, as the Hoyas took down Oregon 65-61. The Ducks entered this season as one of the favorites to win a national title, but they have now lost two of their last three games.
Rodney Pryor led the Hoyas with 26 points and 10 rebounds, but Georgetown nearly blew the game after jumping out to a 17-point halftime lead. Head coach John Thompson III noted that his team did not panic when Oregon came storming back, as it relied on its defense to hold on for the win, per the Maui Invitational website:
"That lead, as much as we talk about what Rodney did, the lead in the first half was because of our defense. I don't know what they had at halftime. We held that team to 21 points in the half. That's a powerful offensive team and I think our defensive focus, our defensive intensity, our defensive communication was very good. So to answer your question, we're like let's get back to that. We're going to win this game if we get enough stops and enough rebounds.
So our guys did a good job not getting dejected and refocusing.
"
Georgetown is a big, strong team that was able to wear down an athletic Oregon team. However, the Hoyas will have a more difficult matchup on Tuesday against a Wisconsin team that plays a similar power style. This sets up what should be the closest game of the day.
Wisconsin, who is among the favorites to win the Big Ten, dropped a game last week at Creighton, but the Badgers were solid in a 74-62 win over Tennessee on Monday. Nigel Hayes scored 17 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Bronson Koenig added 21 points.
The Badgers were able to control the glass, pulling down 36 rebounds to Tennessee's 25, and they were able to get easy looks at the basket thanks to Koenig's driving ability and the skill of Hayes and Ethan Happ down low. As a result, Wisconsin shot a sparkling 56.3 percent from the floor.
However, Wisconsin allowed Tennessee to stay in the game due to turnovers. The Badgers gave the ball away 18 times, and head coach Greg Gard addressed this problem after the game, per the tournament's website.
"This is something we continually try to work on. And basically it's playing too fast.
It's not playing at a tempo where you're under control. And some of it is passing and catching fundamentals but a lot of it is footwork in terms of what decisions we're making when we're in the air, don't have our balance, or we try to throw the ball into places that it has no business going.
It has to be reduced drastically. We know it. We'll continue to work on it. And they understand it. They understand that if we want to become the best we can be throughout the course of the season, that's 18 shots we don't get at the basket. So it will be constantly reinforced and continue to work on it.
"
Unfortunately for Georgetown, it struggles with the same issue.
On the season, the Hoyas have committed 56 turnovers compared to 58 by Wisconsin. Georgetown turned it over 15 times against Oregon, but it will need to drastically reduce that number to take down the Badgers.
Wisconsin boasts tremendous depth, as it has seven players averaging over five points per game compared to Georgetown's four. This gives the Badgers a slight advantage in a game that will likely be a physical affair with a high amount of fouls. The Hoyas' lack of consistency is also a problem, as they blew a late lead to Maryland and lost to Arkansas State in this early season.
Expect Wisconsin to pull out a win here, which could set up a marquee tournament championship with North Carolina, assuming it takes care of business against Oklahoma State.
