James Harden Comments on Russell Westbrook, Thunder Without Kevin Durant
James Harden provided a brief yet accurate scouting report on the Oklahoma City Thunder without Kevin Durant this season.
"It's Russ. It's Russ, and it's a one-man show," Harden said Tuesday, per Erik Horne of the Oklahoman.
While Russell Westbrook was a first-team All-NBA player last season, he has stepped up his production this year with Durant now a member of the Golden State Warriors. Through 11 games, he ranks second in the NBA with 32 points per game, second with 9.9 assists per game and 13th with 9.7 rebounds per game.
Unsurprisingly, his 23.5 shot attempts per game are a career high.
Only two other players on the Thunder are averaging double digits in points, with Victor Oladipo's 15.2 PPG being less than half of Westbrook's average.
Although Oklahoma City got off to a strong start, the team has lost four games in a row heading into Wednesday's matchup against the Houston Rockets.
Of course, Harden is one of the few players who knows exactly how Westbrook feels. The Rockets star saw his scoring average jump from 16.8 PPG to 25.9 PPG after being traded from Oklahoma City to Houston in 2012, moving from the shadow of Durant and Westbrook to being a go-to option in Houston.
He continued to improve his all-around game in recent years, joining Westbrook in a rare category to start this season, per Bleacher Report:
Although Westbrook's assists dropped slightly last game, Harden currently leads the NBA with 12.6 per game to go with 30.3 PPG. There is also a major gap between him and the next-best scorer on the team, with Eric Gordon ranking second at 16.6 PPG.
Westbrook and Harden have combined for five triple-doubles already this year.
Both players have clearly taken on the "one-man show" strategy throughout the 2016-17 season, which could make their upcoming matchup one to watch. The biggest question is whether any of their teammates can help them earn a win.
