Donovan Peoples-Jones Reveals Top 5: Odds on Where 4-Star WR Lands

Sanjay KirpalaniOct 31, 2016

The recruitment of 4-star wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones is nearing its conclusion, as the standout from Cass Tech High School in Detroit has narrowed his list of suitors to five.

The 6'2 ½", 190-pounder announced that Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are the programs he will consider moving forward.

Peoples-Jones, who rates as the nation’s No. 4 receiver and the No. 34 player overall in the 2017 cycle, is scheduled to be an early enrollee, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.

That means that a decision is likely to come by late December or early January for the U.S. Army All-American.

Which school holds the best chance to win out in his recruitment?

Let’s take a look at some odds for each of his finalists.

12-1: Florida, Florida State

Sunshine State rivals and powerhouses Florida and Florida State are the two schools threatening to lure Peoples-Jones away from the Big Ten footprint.

Peoples-Jones took visits to both programs in the summer and is likely to take official visits to Gainesville and Tallahassee before making a decision.

As Wiltfong noted, he’s not as familiar with the Gators and the Seminoles as he is with the other finalists.

"Florida State is another school like Florida where [I] haven’t been there that much and haven’t been there for a game," Peoples-Jones told Wiltfong earlier this month. "They’re definitely in the running."

The chances for both teams likely hinge on blowing him away when he officially visits their campuses. Until those visits take place, it’s hard to imagine either school getting him to head to the Sunshine State for the next four years.

10-1: Michigan State, Ohio State

Peoples-Jones has already used official visits to see both Nebraska and Ohio State.

The returns from his visit to Columbus were positive, as Peoples-Jones confirmed to Wiltfong.

"They made it a priority to answer all of the questions I had," Peoples-Jones told Wiltfong. "I just was able to see more of the aspects of Ohio State outside of football."

Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer is one of the best closers in recruiting, so it would be foolish to discount them until Peoples-Jones announces he’s heading elsewhere.

Still, the last school he visited was an unofficial trip to Michigan State on Oct. 15.

He’s visited East Lansing multiple times and is familiar with Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio and his staff.

Both programs will hope to get him back on campus before he decides. For both schools, it appears a solid foundation has been laid to be in the mix until he decides.

5-1: Michigan

If there is one program that appears to have the most momentum with the top overall prospect from the state of Michigan, it’s the Wolverines.

According to his 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions page, Michigan is the heavy favorite to land his commitment.

The Wolverines have yet to land a commitment from a receiver in the 2017 cycle, and Peoples-Jones is one of a handful of elite pass-catching targets who head coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff are prioritizing.

Wolverines 4-star quarterback pledge Dylan McCaffrey noted as such recently, telling Wiltfong that Peoples-Jones is among a group of prospects he is aggressively trying to get to join him in Ann Arbor.

Michigan is another campus he’s frequented this year. With the momentum the Wolverines have on the field and their need at receiver, Ann Arbor looks like his most likely landing spot at this stage of his recruitment.
