EPL Results Week 9: Saturday's 2016 Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and Table

Mike ChiariOct 22, 2016

Saturday's EPL action was somewhat light on scoring, but it had a significant impact on the table, with multiple teams moving past or even with idle Manchester City.

Arsenal and Liverpool shot to the top of the standings with a draw and a win, respectively, while Tottenham Hotspur remained the Premier League's only unbeaten team by grinding out a tough draw away from home.

With Week 9 of the EPL slate nearly in the books, here is a rundown of Saturday's scores, the updated standings and the tight goalscoring race.

Romelu Lukaku

Everton's Romelu Lukaku entered the day just one goal behind Chelsea's Diego Costa for the EPL goalscoring lead, but he was unable to match or surpass the Spaniard Saturday.

The Toffees fell 2-1 to Burnley in disappointing fashion, and while Lukaku didn't score, he did earn an assist on Yannick Bolasie's goal. That combination has been firing on all cylinders, according to OptaJoe:

Lukaku's assist was less a pass than it was Bolasie essentially taking the ball off his teammate's foot, and he joked about the play after the match, per BBC.com"It's about time he gave me one to be honest. I'm grateful we scored but I'm disappointed. That's only the second loss of the season but we should at least have taken a draw."

Despite the loss and his failure to find the back of the net, Lukaku remains in top form. He is very much in position to give Costa a run for his money as the Premier League's top scorer.

Costa will have an opportunity to build on his lead Sunday, but Lukaku may be the player to beat in that regard moving forward.

None of the EPL's top scorers was able to beat the opposing keeper on Saturday, and Arsenal's Theo Walcott was no exception.

The Gunners turned in a poor overall performance and settled for a 0-0 home draw against Middlesbrough despite being heavily favored.

While the draw was good enough for them to move ahead of Manchester City in the table temporarily, Arsenal squandered a significant opportunity, as did Walcott, who could have cut into Costa's goalscoring lead.

Despite Walcott getting shut out Saturday, he has already enjoyed a better 2016-17 season than he had in all of 2015-16, as seen in this graphic courtesy of BBC Sport:

A big part of that has been the support of other high-scoring teammates in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. Per Arsenal Relevant, that trio has been the pre-eminent attacking group among EPL clubs so far this season:

Arsenal can't afford to have many more performances like the one they put forth Saturday against beatable teams if they hope to win the EPL this season.

The same can be said for Walcott in the scoring race, as he should be able to feast on lower-level competition such as Middlesbrough.

Michail Antonio

Saturday's match was a big one for West Ham United in terms of staying clear of the relegation line, and although top scorer Michail Antonio struggled, the Hammers escaped with a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

West Ham needed some late magic from Winston Reid to pick up the victory. He scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to avoid what would have been a disappointing draw at home to the league's worst team.

Antonio didn't look himself and was subbed off fairly early in the match, as Sofiane Feghouli replaced him in the 63rd minute.

Perhaps no one among the top five scorers in the EPL this season is more surprising than Antonio, and while he was able to maintain his position, he couldn't move up to challenge Costa or Lukaku.

The Hammers need Antonio to get back on track if they want to continue to avoid relegation, and he must regain his form to be a threat in the scoring race as well.
