Defending Champs Showing Interest In Chalmers

Friday, Oct. 14

According to ESPN's Marc Stein on Friday, there are rumors swirling that the Cleveland Cavaliers have "strong interest" in bringing on Chalmers once he is healthy.

Chalmers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in March after being traded from the Miami Heat to the Memphis Grizzlies, a team riddled with injuries.

With just seven healthy men on their roster at the time he went down, Chalmers had to be cut in order to open a spot for an able player.

In 55 games with them, the 30-year-old recorded 10.8 points, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

He played his first seven-plus seasons in the NBA with the Heat in which he was teammates with Cavaliers star LeBron James for four seasons from 2010-2014.

On a superteam that won a pair of titles, Chalmers was often overshadowed by James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh as he put up 8.8 points and 3.8 assists per game.

While he would sometimes draw the ire of them as a facilitator, Chalmers co-existed well with Miami's stars, including James:

The Cavaliers already have a bona fide star in point guard Kyrie Irving, so Chalmers would be playing a limited role in Cleveland like Matthew Dellavedova did before he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.

However, a veteran presence off of the bench that has had experience playing with James could be a nice addition to a Cavaliers team looking to defend its first-ever NBA title.
